South Dakota Spotlight

Explore American landforms and waterways, with special attention to South Dakota geography. This collection for Grades 3 through 5 introduces the Appalachian Mountains, Great Lakes, Mississippi River, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, Gulf of Mexico, Hudson River, Ohio River, and Niagara Falls.

South Dakota topics include the Black Hills, Badlands, Bear Butte, Spearfish Canyon, Black Elk Peak, Missouri River, James River, and Big Sioux River. Students learn where each feature is located, how it formed, what makes it distinct, and how people and wildlife use the surrounding land and water.

The books support geography, earth science, map skills, and regional studies within the US curriculum. Teachers can use them for state reports, landform units, research projects, compare-and-contrast tasks, and reading practice. The mix of national and state topics helps readers place South Dakota within a wider geographic setting while building knowledge of mountains, plains, rivers, lakes, falls, canyons, and fossil-rich landscapes.
