Understanding The Different Formatting Styles

EPUB (short for electronic publication) is a format created by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) that has the extension .epub. It is really just a ZIP file with html files that represent chapters and pages in your book. The reason why an EPUB is important is because 90% of eBook retailers will accept an EPUB file for sales on their websites. If you have a book that is NOT in this type of format it limits the number of retailers your book may be distributed to. While this is not the only format accepted it’s the most widely accepted.

By definition EPUB is designed for reflowable content, meaning that an EPUB reader can optimize text for a particular display device such as the Kindle, Nook, Kobo Reading Device, iPAD and other Tablets and Mini Computers. EPUB also supports fixed-layout content. The format is intended as a single format that publishers and conversion houses can use in-house, as well as for distribution and sale. It supersedes the Open eBook standard.

Let Speedy Publishing convert your book from Microsoft Word to EPUB format complete with chapters and readable by Adobe Digital Editions (Download Adobe Digital Editions).

What is A MOBI file and why every author needs one for their book?

Files that use the .mobi file extension are very similar to an EPUB file, they both are designed to allow readers to access digital eBooks which have been created and saved using the Mobipocket binary eBook format. This is typically the format used by Amazon’s Kindle reading devices and several other online retailers. While not as popular as the EPUB this is the format of choice by Amazon and while Amazon does convert the books submitted in other formats to a MOBI file it does leave much to be desired for a reading experience. Having a file formatted specifically for this purpose is very beneficial to both the reader and the author.

Two important things to note about the MOBI eBook file format is that it supports standard HTML and it is one of the three major Open eBook Publication formats used typically in for eBook distribution.

MOBI files may contain DRM copyright protection features. DRM features prevent unauthorized users from viewing or copying an eBook that is contained in the MOBI file. You can read a Mobi File by Kindle Previewer. Download The Kindle Previewer Here

What is A Web Optimized PDF?

Portable Document Format (PDF) is the defacto file format for presenting device-independent documents on and off the Web. PDFs are an efficient way to accurately describe simple to intricate documents for screen or print output. A PDF document is a collection of objects with structural information in a self-contained series of bytes.

PDF optimization is often overlooked when creating PDF files for the Web. While PDFs have become quite popular on the Web, many PDFs used in web sites are designed for high quality print output and are not optimized for the Web.

Even PDFs designed for Web use can have a wait problem, weighed down with excess fonts, change histories, and unoptimized images and forms. Optimizing PDF files for the Web can significantly shrink their size and boost display speed, saving bandwidth and user frustration.

Let Speedy Publishing Optimize your files for distribution to eBook Retailers.
